Happy People Aren't Always Great At Empathy

Perpetually happy individuals are wonderful to have around, until you experience something worth complaining about. Recent research in PLOS ONE suggests that people who are generally cheerful are not so great at reading other people's negative emotions, though what's especially interesting is that they think they're very good at it.

Researchers asked the participants both how happy they tended to be from day to day and how empathetic they considered themselves. The cheerier volunteers tended to tell the researchers that they were more empathetic, too, when compared to their not-quite-so-happy study subject counterparts. Alex Fradera, in a post at the British Psychological Society's Research Digest, describes what happened next:
The researchers next studied videos of people giving a monologue about an autobiographical event. For each of the videos (two positive events, two negative events), participants rated, second-by-second, the level of negative or positive emotion they thought the speaker was currently feeling.
Participants with a more upbeat personality believed their accuracy on this task to be higher than others. However, the speakers had conducted an identical rating process on their own videos, and it turns out the happier participants were no closer to the true feelings than the more downbeat participants. In fact, happy participants found it harder to judge the emotional tone of a highly negative monologue, in which a participant described the death of a parent.
So, in a way, this research provides more evidence that Debbie Downer types tend to get the details right, even when it comes to reading emotions.

Aalborg is in Denmark. It is an industrial city with lots of universities in North Jutland. It is the fourth largest city in Denmark. Being located by the Limfjord, it is an important harbour. On the north side of the Limfjord is Norresundby which is connected to Aalborg by a road bridge, an iron railway bridge and a motorway tunnel running under the limfjord.
The old castle is one of the main tourist attractions. It lies in the centre of the town. There are also some picturesque houses of the seventeenth century in the heart of town.
There are flights from Copenhagen to Aalborg. The city can also be reached by bus, train, ferry and car. In the centre of the city it is much better to travel on foot. There is also a good bus system operating during the day. People usually rent bicycles close to tourist information offices. There is a city bike scheme where you can pay a deposit and borrow a bicycle for a number of days. If you plan to stay at Aalborg for very long, it would be wiser to buy one. The police have auctions for bicycles. You can ride your bicycle all along the fjord. It is a beautiful pass time.
The Aalborg carnival is the biggest in Northern Europe. There is a small island called Egholm which can be easily reached by ferry. Aalborg also has a casino, ice skating and an open swimming pool. There are lots of supermarkets in Aalborg, and about three hundred restaurants to choose from. There are beautiful sites to see all over and each of them is easily accessible by car.

Siemens Selects Iowa Site for Its First Wind Turbine Blade Manufacturing Facility in the U.S.; Will Help Meet Strong U.S. Demand for Clean, Renewable Energy
ORLANDO, Fla. FORT MADISON, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 17, 2006--Siemens Power Generation announced today that it has executed a purchase agreement for a U.S. wind turbine blade manufacturing site located in Fort Madison, Iowa. The manufacturing facility will be established in an existing 224,000-square-foot building complex on nearly 127 acres in Lee County, which is located in the southeastern area of the state, close to the Mississippi river. The facility is expected to employ an estimated 250 people. This new manufacturing facility in Fort Madison will allow Siemens to meet the strong U.S. demand for wind power generators in the future. Closing for the facility is scheduled in the coming weeks.
"This will be Siemens' first wind turbine production facility in the U.S. and will further expand the capacities of our worldwide manufacturing network," said Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Power Generation, Inc. and member of the PG Group Executive Management. "Since the initial acquisition of Bonus Energy A/S in 2004, we expanded our existing blade plant in Aalborg / Denmark, opened an additional factory in Denmark, and now this is another important step in our strategy to build our global presence in the wind energy business, and serve growing markets," added Zwirn.
The Fort Madison facility will be upgraded and expanded in order to more suitably meet the needs of the company's wind turbine business. The first blades to be manufactured at the Fort Madison facility will be for the company's 2.3-MW wind turbines, which incorporate the Siemens-patented IntegralBlade technology. With this technology, the blade is cast in one piece in a single step from glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin in a closed, environmentally compatible process. Series production of rotor blades for wind turbines is scheduled to start in Fort Madison in the first half of 2007. Due the site's close proximity to water, rail and road transportation options, and its central location in the United States, it is ideal for wind turbine blade manufacturing where logistics are critically important due to the massive size of the blades.
"Our state lies in the center of the largest wind generation region in the U.S., and therefore we're uniquely positioned to serve this promising market," said Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack. "As a leader in alternative energy production, Iowans understand the enormous opportunities this announcement represents, and we look forward to adding Siemens wind turbine technology to our sources of renewable, clean power."
The state of Iowa, Lee County and the city of Fort Madison pooled resources to provide an attractive incentive package to assist with the start-up effort. The Iowa Economic Development Board approved direct assistance from the Economic Development Set-Aside program and tax incentives from the High Quality Jobs Creation program as part of the agreement to locate the project in the state.
"Siemens has long been committed to bringing clean, efficient power generation options to the energy market. Today, as part of our environmental care strategy, our portfolio offers an array of efficient and environmentally compatible solutions, including wind power. By expanding our wind power manufacturing capacity into the U.S., we will substantially increase our ability to competitively serve this important market, which is projected to triple by the year 2020," said Zwirn.

With the U.S. Department of Energy's goal of obtaining six percent of U.S. electricity from wind by 2020 and the growing public demand for clean energy, it is expected that wind energy will contribute an increasing amount of the nation's energy supply.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and author of the wind energy tax credit commented, "With the recently adopted wind energy tax credits, we're well positioned to increase the renewable power generation sources in the U.S. in the future, and with this new Siemens facility, Iowa will be at the epicenter of supplying clean, alternative energy sources."
Employment recruiting to support the ramp-up of the facility is expected to begin immediately and continue through the end of the year. The company will be recruiting management, administrative and technical support personnel, as well as an estimated 200 production and maintenance employees required to manufacture the wind turbine blades. The addition of these jobs will double Siemens' existing employment base in Iowa, and all will be new jobs in Iowa specifically created to support the Siemens wind manufacturing facility.

Denver Zoo is first in western hemisphere to earn both ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 - Denver going green
Visitors to the Denver Zoo on Wednesday celebrated National Zoo Lovers Day, along with zoo fans throughout the United States. A recent distinction makes Colorado's largest zoological park unique, joining company with zoos in Beijing, Denmark and Singapore.
In March 2015, the Denver Zoo became the first in the western hemisphere to achieve international distinction for its environmental, health and safety management systems with two international certifications. It was re-accredited with ISO 14001 certification and, for the first time, added the OHSAS 18001.

Only the Beijing Zoo, Denmark's Aalborg Zoo and Singapore's Wildlife Reserves carry both certifications.
"We are extremely proud to be awarded these designations, which were earned by far exceeding the minimum standards of many national entities," said George Pond, Denver Zoo vice president for design and campus management.
Pond said the zoo constantly strives to improve in all aspects of operations. He hoped the certifications demonstrate how much the zoo values the well-being of employees, guests and volunteers by adopting international best practices.
In 2009, Denver's zoo became the first zoo to achieve certification to the ISO, or International Organization for Standardization, 14001 Standard, the highest international accreditation for commitment and adoption of best practices in environmental management. The Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, or OHSAS, is the highest certification for occupational health and safety management.
An external third-party auditor spent four days in February examining all of zoo's processes, operations and overall culture. Staff and volunteers were interviewed. The efforts of the nonprofit's safety committee were examined. The auditor left with no negative findings.
In 2011, the Denver Zoo was given the first green award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, earning the designation of the greenest zoo in the country.

Faulty Household Wiring Can Trigger a Heart Defibrillator
WEDNESDAY, March 25 (HealthDay News) -- A literally shocking tale of the potential dangers of do-it-yourself home repairs for people with implanted defibrillators comes from cardiologists in Denmark.
"We recently cared for a patient who, after receiving an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, was readmitted shortly after hospital discharge because of two shocks delivered while the patient was showering," said a report in the March 26 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
There was no apparent physical reason why the device, which delivers a shock to restore normal heart rhythm if an arrhythmia occurs, should have gone off, but analysis "raised suspicion that electrical noise had caused an inappropriate ICD discharge," the report said. So the physicians sent an electrician to check the wiring of the house.
"It was found that it was due to improper installation of wiring in the patient's home because he installed a washing machine himself," said Dr. Kristian Eskesen, a cardiologist at Gentofte Hospital in Hellerup, one of the physicians reporting the event. "It was not properly grounded."
The shock would not have occurred if the washing machine had been installed by a licensed electrician, since Danish law requires safe grounding, Eskesen said. Cardiac safety was not the reason for the law, he said, "but it is one way of avoiding such problems with ICDs," he added.
There have been scattered reports of similar events with heart defibrillators. In 2002, for example, cardiologists in Hong Kong reported two such cases -- one caused by electrical signals from a power drill, the other by signals from a washing machine. And, German cardiologists described an instance of a defibrillator shock delivered because of electromagnetic signals from a washing machine.
"The reason for writing our report was to make colleagues aware of this possible problem," said report co-author Dr. Soren Hjortshoj, of Aalborg Hospital, in Aalborg, Denmark. "ICD therapy is generally a safe treatment that can help people with heart disease. But physicians should be aware of the possibility of false shocks and the reason for these."
In general, "manufacturers of ICDs do a tremendous job of making ICDs safe," Hjortshoj said. Still, "an ICD has to be sensitive to very small changes in the electrical impulses coming from the heart," which makes it vulnerable to some electrical signals originating outside of the heart, he said.
"It is luckily a rare phenomenon, but even in a very regulated society like Denmark, these occurrences take place," Hjortshoj said. "It is very essential that the ICD works correctly and triggers on the right event, otherwise it may be hostile."
Properly monitored, "the ICD is a safe treatment," he said. "But the authorities need to be aware that the regulations about electrical equipment should be followed."

It's been two full months since the season five finale of Pretty Little Liars left PLL fans hanging. Sure, we know that Charles is Big A, but what does that mean in the grand scheme of the Pretty Little Liars universe and who is Uber A? Let's face it, the Pretty Little Liars season finale may have been a big reveal, but, as usual, that reveal left PLL fans with far more questions than answers.
That's okay though, because, as showrunner I. Marlene King knows, there's nothing PLL fans love more than to discuss their favorite mysteries and theories. While this two-month hiatus has had the occasional hints dropped for the more savvy Pretty Little Liars theorists, it seems possible that there hasn't been anything more tantalizing than this latest PLL sneak peek.
This is undoubtedly the moment for fans of Pretty Little Liars to begin dissecting the clip for clues, some hidden and some plainly obvious. In the clip, Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) has been cleared of the murder of Mona Vanderwaal (Janel Parrish) and is making a statement in the hopes of flushing out the whereabouts of A's dollhouse, where Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) remain trapped.
The most obvious clue for PLL fans comes even before Alison makes her endearing appeal to the public. The reporter at the beginning of this Pretty Little Liars clip reveals that Andrew Campbell (Brandon Jones) has been missing, since the girls' disappearance. Has Andrew been working with Charles all along, helping to lure the liars into a well-laid trap? Perhaps Andrew is Uber A? Could he be the one pulling Charles' strings?
In a recent interview with People, Sasha Pieterse couldn't comment on Charles, but she did reveal more about her own character and it seems as though Alison may be a bit more likable in season six of Pretty Little Liars. If not likable, at least Alison will more understandable and that's almost the same thing. Right, PLL fans?...right?
"Mainly what I'm excited about is to see the progress of what we know about A and also what my character's going to go through, because she needs some serious help," Pieterse said. "And I think the fans will enjoy that because you're going to find out even more about what's happened to Alison and why she's gotten to the state of mind that she's in and why she's chosen to lie about all these things. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - PGA TOUR - WHYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP, Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina - Following the year's final major in the PGA Championship, the PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship this week.
This is the final regular season event on tour this season before the FedExCup kicks off at The Barclays next week.
Patrick Reed birdied the second playoff hole at this event last year to top Jordan Spieth and capture his first career victory. The duo finished their four rounds at 14-under-par 266.
Reed has won two events since, with both of them coming this season. Reed earned victories at the Humana Challenge and the WGC-Cadillac Championship earlier this year.
Joining Reed in this week's field are 2012 U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and the No. 18 player in the world Hideki Matsuyama, among others.
Golf channel will have coverage all four days and will hand things off to CBS in the afternoon on Saturday and Sunday.
The PGA Tour's best golfers begin their quest for a FedExCup title next week as they head to Paramus, New Jersey for The Barclays, where Adam Scott took home the title last year.
LPGA TOUR
WEGMANS LPGA CHAMPIONSHIP, Monroe Golf Club, Pittsford, New York - The LPGA Tour is in New York this week for its fourth major of the season, the Wegmans LPGA Championship.
Inbee Park defeated Catriona Matthew on the third playoff hole last year to capture her second of three major championships in 2013. Park also won the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the U.S. Women's Open title last year. She also won the U.S. Women's Open in 2008.
Park stumbled to a final-round, 3-over 75 at this event in 2013, while Matthew carded a 3-under 68, forcing a playoff between the two. They both finished regulation play at 5-under 283.
Park will be back to defend her title again this year, and she will go up against some of the best players in the world including two-time major champion Stacy Lewis and young phenom Lydia Ko, who is seeking her first major title. Due to an injured right index finger, this year's U.S. Women's Open champion Michelle Wie will not be participating.
Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds.
The LPGA Tour will be in action again next week for the Canadian Pacific Women's Open. Ko has won this event two years in a row. She did so as an amateur before turning pro this season.
EUROPEAN TOUR
MADE IN DENMARK, Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort, Aalborg, Denmark - The European Tour is in Denmark this week for the inaugural Made in Denmark.
This will be the first European Tour event played in Denmark since 2003.
The field is headlined by Thomas Bjorn, who is one of several Danish players playing in this week's event. Bjorn, a 15-time winner on the European Tour, will be joined by fellow Danish players Thorbjorn Olesen and Morten Orum Madsen. Olesen is coming off a PGA Championship where he finished tied for 30th.
Coming off his third career victory on the European Tour at the M2M Russian Open two weeks ago, David Horsey will also play in this week's event.
Golf Channel will have coverage all four days.
The European Tour next heads to the Czech Republic for the D+D Real Czech Masters. The last time this event was played was in 2011, where Oliver Fisher took home the title.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
DICK'S SPORTING GOODS OPEN, En-Joie Golf Course, Endicott, New York - The Champions Tour is back after a week off as players get ready for this week's Dick's Sporting Goods Open.
Bart Bryant, a Champions Tour rookie last season, fired a final-round, even- par 72 last year and he held off Corey Pavin and Russ Cochran to earn a 1- stroke victory. Bryant finished his week at 16-under 200. He has yet to win on tour since.
Bryant returns this year as he looks to defend his title. He will be joined by Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie, who have each won two major championships on tour this season. Regions Tradition champion Kenny Perry is not in the field this week.
Golf Channel will have coverage of all three days of this event, which begins on Friday.
The Champions Tour will be in Washington next week for the Boeing Classic, where John Riegger earned a 2-shot victory last year. It was Riegger's first and only win on tour.
WEB.COM TOUR
NEWS SENTINAL OPEN, Fox Den Country Club, Knoxville, Tennessee - The Web.com Tour is back in Knoxville for another installment of the News Sentinal Open.
Last year, Peter Malnati birdie his final hole to break a five-way tie and win by one stroke. It was Malnati's first and only win on tour.
Malnati fired a final-round 65 and ended his week at 16-under 268. He narrowly edged out Matt Bettencourt, Miguel Angel Carballo, James White and Blayne Barber, all of whom ended one shot back at minus-15.
Now on the PGA Tour, Malnati will not be defending his title at this week's event. Malnati has struggled this season, missing 15 cuts in 19 events so far. However, in four events in which he has made the cut, Malnati has three top-20 finishes, with his best one coming at the Puerto Rico Open, where he tied for 14th.
There will be no television coverage of this event.
The Web.com Tour will finish off the regular season with the inaugural WinCo Foods Portland Open next week in North Plains, Oregon.

JUANDE RAMOS showed his UEFA Cup Midas touch last night with a
double half-time substitution which launched a spectacular secondhalf
comeback to beat Aalborg.
In a shocking opening period, Spurs staged a virtual repeat of
their last European home game when they lost 2-1 to Getafe in Martin
Jol's final game in charge.
But deservedly trailing 2-0 at the break, the Spanish coach gambled
and won by throwing on Tom Huddlestone and Darren Bent at the break to
inspire a fabulous fightback in a crazy encounter.
Dimitar Berbatov and Steed Malbranque drew Tottenham level before
the England striker netted the winner to extend Ramos' unbeaten
start at the club to six games in all competitions.
And the three points in Group G all but assured Spurs' passage
through to the last 32 of a competition that Ramos has won in the past
two seasons with Sevilla. The joint leaders of the Danish First Division
went ahead after only 109 seconds.
From a throw-in midway into the Spurs half, midfielder Thomas
Enevoldsen picked up the ball and brushed off a challenge from Robbie
Keane before unleashing a a swerving 20-yard shot which whistled past
Paul Robinson's despairing dive.
With Tottenham players and fans shellshocked and the visiting
support chanting in annoyingly good English, Aalborg's early
passing and movement had Ramos' side chasing shadows.
Sloppy at the back and carelessly giving away possession, you did
not need to speak fluent Spanish to read the coach's agitated body
language.
The Danes were denied a strong penalty claim after 23 minutes when
Andreas Johansson slipped in his strike partner Rade Prica only for Lee
to bundle the Swede to the ground without getting near the ball.
And only a perfectly-timed tackle from a retreating Jermaine Jenas
on Siyabonga Nomvethe just as the South African international was
preparing to shoot prevented a second goal.
But it was not long coming.
In another flowing Danish move, Johansson again released Prica,
this time in acres of space down the left wing.
Robinson started to come out but retreated and Gareth Bale and
Pascal Chimbonda failed to deal with the low cross and allowed Kasper
Risgard to stab home from inside the sixyard box.
Ramos responded a the break by pulling off Jenas and Lee for his
two subs. And in an even more dramatic start to the second period, the
changes took only 39 seconds to make an impact.
Huddlestone fed Berbatov and the Bulgarian slid in front of Zaza to
toe-poke home his ninth goal in 11 European games for the club.
And after 51 minutes Spurs were level. This time Berbatov crossed
from the right and although Bent's shot was blocked, Keane coolly
squared the rebound to Malbranque.
The Frenchman took a touch and drilled his shot into the roof the
net. Ramos quickly cut the wild celebrations short to send his men back
looking for more. And as the momentum of this madcap game swung
Tottenham's way, Bent notched the third after 66 minutes.
Keeper Zaza beat away Bale's free-kick but Lennon drilled the
rebound back across goal and the England striker tapped in at the far
post.

City of lights a beacon to industry as frozen food producers come to SIAL; Pescanova and Loblaw to receive SIAL D'Or awards for frozen food innovations; Iglo getting national award at Paris show, which bills itself as "the world's largest food industry exhibition." Most of innovation in frozen food, or "produits surgeles," will be found in Hall 5A. (SIAL 2002: the global food marketplace).
The city of lights becomes the city of food Oct. 20-24 as some
5,200 exhibitors from 94 countries gather to take part in SIAL (Salon
International D'Alimentation) al the Parc des Expositions de
Paris-Nord Villepinte.
Presentation of the SIAL D'Or awards for 2002 will be one of
the highlights of the expo. Two frozen food items made the cut this
year: President's Choice semi-boneless Easy Carve Turkey from
Loblaw Brands Ltd., Toronto, Canada, in the poultry division; and split
whole lobsters and lobster tails from Pescanova France S.A., in the
seafood category.
Loblaw's Easy Curve Turkey has already won a Canadian Grand
Prix in the private label category from the Canadian Council of Grocery
Distributors. "This turkey has completely transformed the meaning
of carving a turkey," the Council said. "Except for two
drumsticks, the bones and wings have been removed and the bird has been
stuffed with seasoned breadcrumbs and tart cranberries. From freezer to
oven, it is ready in five minutes. Carve the turkey like a loaf of
bread."
"Forget the slicer and let yourself go with the pleasure of
tasting an exceptional product," Pescanova rhapsodizes about its
innovative frozen lobster, which offers "all the pleasures, without
the disadvantages" of fresh lobster. The lobsters themselves are
caught in the Gulf of Mexico, mostly off Cuba, and kept in seawater ponds until they are split and frozen raw. They are packed in plastic
tubes to prevent damage; whole lobsters range from 630 to 780 grains,
lobster tails from 200 to 400.
Trends 2002, around which a lot of SIAL is organized, is divided
into five themes, most of which have several sub-themes:

Ingredients and Additives Expertise Center, which will, the organizers
explain, provide "an overview of the international markets for
ingredients and additives and how [they] are used in formulas, finished
products and product innovations." The center will offer a
specialized database plus provide one-on-one advice from specialists in
the industry.
Frozen food consumption in France for 2001 totaled 1.84 million
tons, divided about equally between retail and catering, according to SIAL, with sales valued at 5.14 billion euros. SIAL puts the world
market for frozen food and ice creams of 1999 al 20.4 million tons,
valued at 98.5 billion, with Europe accounting for 10.3 million tons and
36 billion euros.
Frozen food innovations detailed at the SIAL website include
four-count Danish pastries made with buckwheat flour and shaped like
tiny baskets (Compagnie Artique, France) and Caramar Glace, caramel ice
cream with a carambar heart packed in cardboard tubes (Rolland SAS, also
France). More than 30 others are briefly mentioned:

Perhaps the most innovative is Mild Curry Fries, something you
won't easily find in the United States even though it's billed
as an American Specialty, but that fits right in with European
multi-ethnic tastes.
Coated with a mild curry flavor, these are traditional fries with a
crispy texture and great holding time. They are delicately seasoned to
enhance real potato flavor and to provide maximum heat retention, and
can liven up any entree or meal combo, from traditional burgers and
specialty sandwiches to fried chicken, barbecued pork ribs and much
more.
Also being shown off by Lamb-Weston/Meijer, a joint venture between
the Kruiningen-based Meijer Potato Group and the US Lamb Weston, Inc.,
are seasoned Wavelength Fries and Crispy Sliced Chips. Wavelength Fries,
a "second fry" alternative to traditional fries, are made with
an exclusive blend of seasonings and spices chosen to give restaurant
meals a zesty taste. Crispy Sliced Chips are thinly sliced with either
skin-on or skin-off for a fresh, kitchen-cut appearance. They deliver
crisp and crunchy freshly cooked taste and texture.
Ardo, Ardooie, Belgium (Fax: 32-51-316722), will be bringing a slew
of new products to Hall 6, Stand C23). Among them are Prefried Onions,
Wild Rice Mix, Vegetable Nuggets, Onion Rings and a line of pasta. Two
of them are part of the Express range for the foodservice industry.
Ardo Express Prefried Onions, for use in any number of dishes, come
in 2.5kg bags for restaurants, hamburger outlets and pizzerias. Wild
Rice Mix combines 80% white long-grain rice with 20% wild rice. The
latter, also known as the "caviar oft rice," has a rich, nutty
taste and is also more nutritious. The combination gives the product an
attractive appearance for use on special occasions. What's more,
it's thoroughly pre-cooked. Also part of the Express range, it too
is available in 2.5kg bags.
Vegetable Nuggets offer three different oven-ready vegetable
portions in a crunchy batter coating: Garden Vegetables, Cauliflower
Cheese and Salsa. They can be served as appetizers or as healthy snacks,
and are available in catering packs of 1.5kg (75 pieces) or a 300g
special retail packs (15 pieces). Onion Rings are a pure indulgence for
people whose eyes water when they slice onions? Part of the Les Tapas range, they come in battered and breaded varieties and are and are
available in 450g and 1kg packs.
Ardo's frozen pasta, which can be used to prepare a host of
different pasta dishes in short time to be served warm or as cold pasta
salads, is made from 100% durum wheat flour and is available in five
varieties: Gnocchi, Penne, Spirelli, Farfalle and Trulli. It comes in
2kg bags.
Lasagna Triangles will be prominently displayed at the stand of
Bitburg, Germany-based Giacobbe Pasta GmbH (Fax: 49-6561/ 94 43-33).
These mini pastas, which weigh about 50 grams per unit, are available
with a number of fillings, including Salmon and Auberine-Mozzarella.
The Lasagna Triangles, which are quickly prepared, may be served at
a variety of dining occasions, ranging from banquets and receptions to
snacks at parties, or as finger food for buffets.
Also promoted at SIAL by Giacobbe will be the company's
Gastronorm and Pasta Pronto systems. The first mentioned is suitable for
Gastronorm sheets. The lasagne is already portioned, making it simple to
handle for all kinds of catering applications.
The Pasta Pronto system is designed for easy preparation in
microwave ovens. The lasagna and pasta ready meals are gratinated. After
just three minutes of preparation time after thawing, the products are
ready to serve. Every single portion is gas-packaged for longer
shelf-life--up to five days from the point of thawing--with no loss of
quality.
From Surgital S.p.A., Lavezzola, Italy (Fax: 39-0545-80121), comes
the Fiordiprimi range of single-serve frozen pasta dishes. First put on
the market in 1997, it has been expanded since then and today includes
29 different items. All are packaged in smart 300g and 350g trays
designed to be used as plates and fitted with disposable forks and
napkins inside the box. They can be heated in just five minutes in a 750
watt microwave oven.
Varieties on display at Hall 5A, Stand D137 include Ham and
Courgette Fiocchetti, filled with a mixture of Gorgonzola, Ricotta and
Grana cheeses and accompanied by a ham, courgette and Taleggio cheese
sauce; Lasagne alla Bolognese, with layers of pasta sheets alternating
with a bechamel sauce and traditional meat ragu; Tortellini Bolognesi in
a cream, ham and pine-nut sauce; Garganelli in Salmon Sauce, using a
pasta shape patented by Surgital and accompanied by a smoked salmon,
cream and tomato sauce.
Frozen cocktail products are new from Tipiak S.A., Pont St. Marton,
France (Fax: 33-2-4004-0326). Visitors to Hall 5A, Stand E123, will get
a chance to sample the items for themselves. The range includes 20-count
assorted canapes and topped mini-blinis, 20-count assorted mini-cakes,
16-count assorted sweet petits fours and 12-count assorted chocolate
petits fours. Matching the quality of products from traditional master
caterers, they are targeted at supermarkets, hypermarkets and freezer
centers throughout Europe.
N.V. YSCO S.A., Langemark, Belgium (Fax: 32-57490399), is coming to
Hall 5A, Stand F159 with ice cream products ranging from jumbo
multipacks to the smallest cone around, plus new flavors of
Italian-style ice cream.
Splash (Calippo type), already available in bulk packs, will be
debuted in a new multipack for the retail market under the YSCO brand.
Examples include a six-pack with three orange and three cola-flavored
110ml treats. Other flavors, these under private label in 110ml and in
70 ml sizes, include lemon, strawberry, ice tea, and mint.
A huge demand for mini snacks is behind development of the smallest
cone in the cone range: the Mini Mini cone. At only 27ml, it is
available in a multipack of 12 or 24 under private label. Under the YSCO
brand is a multipack of six mini vanilla cones and six mini chocolate
cones. At the other end of the size spectrum is the Jumbo 3 Choc, a
multipack of three 120ml jumbo magnums made with milk chocolate and
white chocolate dairy ice creams and a coating of real Belgian black
chocolate.
Italian-style ice cream is also in big demand these days, so YSCO
has developed new flavors in oval transparent tubs. They combine two
kinds of ice cream and a sauce, blended in the Italian way and topped by
decorations of sauce with fruit or nuts. Danubienne, Banana Split, 3
Chocolates, Tiramisu, Cream Truffel and Peche Melba are all offered
under private label.
Moy Park Ltd., Henin-Beaumont, France (Fax: 33-321-796652) is
coming to SIAL with a range of further processed poultry products from
two factories in northern France--one dedicated to breaded poultry
products and the other to fully-cooked chicken parts.
Value-added breaded poultry products aimed at the industrial,
catering and retail sectors include processed nuggets and wings, chicken
or turkey cordon bleu, kievs (with mushrooms, garlic and carbonara),
different types of breaded escalopes (crunchy, with lemon and pepper).
For the industrial sector, Moy Park uses only meat from fillet and
thigh raw material. All products are fully-cooked. Meat is available in
various forms (diced, sliced or strips) and is roasted for salads,
steam-cooked for sandwiches and pizzas, marinated for ethnic or specific
recipes.
Kids rule at Vitacuire Surgeles, Meyrieu, France (Fax:
33-4-7831-5348). At least, you'll be finding a lot of
children's frozen fare at Hall 5A, Stand E106.
Hot Dog, Chicken and Ham Cheese savory pastries under the
VitaKids brand for youngsters 6-12 are being introduced at SIAL for the
retail market in France and the rest of Europe. The hot dogs in the
first are actually chicken sausages. All three items come in 70g packs.
For adults, meanwhile, Vitacuire is extending its Traiteur range of
savory pastries to include Scampi Crayfish, Duck with Mushroom and
Pike Medallion Provencal. A bake-off range already launched for the
catering industry includes Premium Meat, Cheese, Chicken Provencal, Goat
Cheese, Hot Dog and Ham Cheese.

Practical Cuisine is the name of the new range from Frigorificos
Delfin S.A., Madrid, Spain (Fax: 34-916-420151), to be shown--and
tasted--at Hall 5A, Stand E178. The company promises
"exquisite" seafood dishes that are both healthy and
convenient, and some of them are pretty unusual, too.
Rice Cooked in Squid Ink? In Spanish it's called Arroz Negro,
and it uses the round rice of Valencia to go with the squid and the
squid ink and other seafood ingredients. Other Practical Cuisine items
include Peppers Stuffed with Seafood Creme, Garlic Shrimp, Octopus a la
Vinaigrette, Octopus a la Salicienne and a Seafood Blend of shrimp,
octopus and surimi. All are prepared in extra virgin olive oil.
Organic stir-fry meals in 450g packs for the retail market are new
from Oerlemans Foods B.V., Venlo, the Netherlands (Fax: 31-77-3821-448)
and will be on display at Hall 5A, Stand J170.
Italian, American and even Dutch as well as Oriental recipes are
part of the range, which is aimed at markets in Western Europe. In the
catering sector, the company is expanding its Mise en Place range to
target Scandinavia as well as the Netherlands, Germany and the rest of
Western Europe.
Also showcased will be Oerleman's Bio-Organic spinach a la
creme and Curly Kale 450g mini portions.
All items will be available for tasting at the stand, where J.C.
Visser, managing director, will lead the Oerlemans delegation. This
summer he assumed complete operational responsibilities of Oerlemans,
following the withdrawal of Jan Hulsen. After running the frozen
vegetable specialist firm for some 25 years, Hulsen will now concentrate
more fully on strategic issues affecting parent company Kleiberg Beheer.
Chicken cheese nuggets are being introduced by Gastronomie,
Aucenis, France (Fax: 33-251-142563). New graphics are part of the
package. Another French company, C.B.A. (Compagnie Bretonne de
L'Artichaut), Plovrenan, France (Fax: 33-298-695729), is coming out
with a range of organic convenience foods at Hall 6, Stand F32. Yet
another, Maison Menissez of Feignies (Fax: 33-3-2753-1879) will hold
forth with ciabata and other specialty bakery products.
New IQF fried and roasted beef and poultry products will be shown
off at Gall P3, Stand 27, by Toledo International, Ghent, Belgium (Fax:
32-9-222-3599). They are targeted at the ready meals industry and the
catering trade in most European countries.
A wide range of frozen duck meal solutions will be offered by in
Hall 6, Stand M051 by Cherry Valley Farms Ltd. of Lincoln, England (Fax:
44-00 44 1472 36 24 22). Among products marketed under the Cherry Valley
brand are ready-prepared Honey Roast Half ducklings, which are bred to
deliver more and less fat. Its robust flavor is said to match that of
smoked salmon and Angus beef on the top of the menu.
Emborg Foods of Aalborg, Denmark (www.emborg.com) will promote a
diversified line of frozen meat, poultry, seafood and other products
from it Stand 147 in Hall 6. The company offers wholesalers,
supermarkets and industrial further processors an especially wide range
of meat cuts to suit specific requirements. A recent retail innovation
for the Middle Eastern market was the Emborg B.B.Q. Party Tray, a 1,300g
offering which features fourteen individually quick frozen beef and
chicken items ready to go on the grill.
The Marine Products Export Development Authority of India will be
at the Paris show to promote the subcontinent's abundance of frozen
seafood. In addition to farm-raised black tiger shrimp (Peneaus monodon)
and freshwater scampi (Peneaus rosenbergii), Indian producers offer the
world a wealth of fishery products harvested from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Among the species marketed are Grouper, Skip Jack
Tuna, Red Snapper, Silver Pomfret, Yellow Croaker, Catfish, Squid and
Octopus.

Pinguin N.V., Westrozebeke, Belgium (Fax: 32-51-778382) is coming
to Hall 5A, Stand E96, with plenty of green. The frozen vegetable
supplier will be prominently promoting its King Hua brand Chinese
Vegetable Mix. Available in 1kg packs, the wok-ready blend is made of
shitake mushrooms, black fungus, lotus root, water chestnuts and pea
pods.
With an active buying and selling organization headquartered in
Shanghai, China, Pinguin has become a specialist in Asian vegetables.
Among other items in its range are white and green asparagus, bamboo
strips, baby corn, garlic, sugar snap peas, oyster mushrooms, onion
allots, ginger, paksoi and cabbage.
Other products highlighted at the Pinguin stand will include its
range of ready meal solutions, including the Formule Express vegetable
dish line marked by daughter company d'LIS Food NV. The joint
venture firm offers a number of recipes, including Canadian Potato and
Vegetables. All are distributed in 450g packages, easy to prepare by
stir-frying in a pan or wok. They are aimed at the caring and he
delivery well as retail markets.

Stuffed individually quick frozen mushrooms and IQF bean sprouts
are new from Champi'mer B.V., Maasbree, the Netherlands (Fax:
31-7703241029), at Hall 5A, Stand K182. The mushrooms are targeted at
the retail as well as the catering market, but the bean sprouts are
destined for industrial as well as catering customers. The company also
produces chilled stuffed mushrooms, olives and tomatoes.

separate plants, Unit 2 and Unit 3. Unit 3 is the primary unit and is
known as the world s most efficient coal-fired power station. It holds a
world record for efficient coal utilisation from 1998. Up to as much as
91% of the energy content of the coal is utilised. The high fuel
utilisation efficiency means that less coal is needed to produce the
same amount of electricity and heat therefore producing less waste and
less pollution.

Obama Administration Moves To Curtail Police Militarization
The Obama administration will announce Monday that local police departments will no longer receive some forms of surplus military gear, in a move designed to combat the expanding militarization of local police forces, NBC News is reporting.
Obama is in Camden, New Jersey - long considered one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. - to discuss plans to reform the institution of policing in the country, in light of a spate of incidents involving police brutality, and a sense of general mistrust between police and regular Americans that has sometimes led to violent protests.
The first priority for the administration is scaling back police militarization. Following today's announcement, local police departments will no longer receive military gear such as tanks, armored assault vehicles, weaponized aircraft, bayonets, and grenade launchers from the federal government.
Some forms of military gear will still be available to local police departments, but only if the department can provide a "clear and persuasive explanation of the need for the controlled equipment." Further, suck military equipment will only go to police departments that have complied with a set of Justice Department policies known as "General Policing Standards."
Those standards include, among other things, the implementation of so-called "Community Policing," which encourages police to interact with citizens and regularly meet with community leaders.
The Obama administration's move comes on the same day as the release of a Justice Department report compiled by the 21st Century Policing Task Force, a committee charged with coming up with solutions for the problem of police-community relations, according to The Guardian.
"Law enforcement culture should embrace a guardian - rather than a warrior - mindset to build trust and legitimacy both within agencies and with the public."
The issue of militarization of local police forces became the subject of a national conversation in August 2014, following alarming scenes of heavily-armed, camouflaged police in tanks and armored vehicles on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, during protests following the shooting of Michael Brown.

Although the militarization of police became a national headline in 2014, the program that allows it dates back to 1997. The program's popularity skyrocketed following the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, according The New York Times, particularly as lawmakers and local police departments sought ways to keep their communities safe.
Ron Davis, 30-year police veteran and former chief of the East Palo Alto Police Department, says via The Guardian that he believes scaling back police militarization will make communities safer.
"We have a unique opportunity to redefine policing in our democracy, to ensure that public safety becomes more than the absence of crime, that it must also include the presence of justice."

NEW YORK -- New York Rangers pesky role player Dominic Moore is appreciated as an NHL player from October through early April and treasured in May and June.
"We've watched him over the last few years, in big moments, make big plays," said Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. "It's in his DNA."
Moore scored by driving the net and having a puck deflect off his shin pad with 2:25 remaining in regulation to give the Rangers to a 2-1 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Saturday.

The goal had added sweetness because Moore had been penalized for tripping with 4:55 left in regulation. He had been on the ice for 25 seconds when Kevin Hayes spotted him flying toward the net. It was a work-ethic goal, and Moore is known as a extreme work-ethic player.
"It's all about preparation for him," Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. "And I see him almost being like a goalie with everything he does in preparing to get to the right place going into every game. I think that's why he has been so consistent throughout his career."
It was oddly appropriate that a celebrated checking forward should decide the opening game of a series that features two of the top three offensive teams in the NHL this season.
"This time of the year, the way he plays, (Moore) becomes even more important," said Rangers forward Martin St. Louis. "He's a guy who can really grind it out and be tough to play against."
Moore has netted four playoff goals over the past two seasons, and three of them were game-winners. He is primarily known for his checking and penalty-killing. Moore was a key figure in a stingy defensive effort put forth by the Rangers in Game 1.
The Lightning were the No. 1 offensive team in the NHL this season, and the Rangers held them to five shots in the third period.
"Good defense will lead to offense," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "Against such a skilled powerhouse offensive team, I think we need to defend, and that's what we did."
The game was played at a triple-time pace, and the Rangers gave up fewer quality scoring chances. The Lightning received the strong goaltending performance they needed from Ben Bishop (28 saves), and it still wasn't enough.
The Rangers have now given up two or fewer goals in 10 of their last 11 games.With Lundqvist as sharp as he always is, the Rangers lead the playoffs with a 1.62 goals-against average.
"To be honest, I don't think we tested Lundqvist as much as we should have," said Lightning captain Steven Stamkos.
But that was because the Rangers defense was highly effective in one-on-one defensive play. Vigneault used defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh primarily against the Ondrej Palat-Tyler Johnson-Nikita Kucherov line, while defenseman Marc Staal matched up against Stamkos.
"I thought we got better as the game went on," Bishop said.
Palat's power play goal tied the game 1-1 at 6:45 in the third, but the Lightning weren't able to generate enough shots to claim a lead. The Lightning's inability to score on those power play was crucial to the game's outcome.
"I can't sit here and blame the power play, because of if it wasn't for the power play the game is not tied," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "We have to look a little more at our five-on-five play and see how we are going to generate more from that."
Tampa Bay played with their super checker Brian Boyle who was scratched before the game with the Lightning announcing that he was day-to-day. "He's a big part of our team," Cooper said. "He kills penalties for us. He's a big body. He wears on teams. Of course we miss him. But everybody misses somebody. They're missing (Mats) Zuccarello, a big part of their team. That happens in the playoffs."
Going back to last year's playoffs, the Rangers have played 15 consecutive games decided by a goal.
"I think this is a comfortable place for us to be," St. Louis said. "We're used to it. You have to play the game that's in front of you and play smart. We've done a really good job of that."
St. Louis said he wasn't surprised that the winning goal, in a game featuring two mighty offenses, would be decided by a puck ricocheting off a leg. "In the playoffs," St. Louis said, "you always expect the unexpected."

GORDON Strachan last night refused to make excuses for the
gut-wrenching defeat in Denmark which saw Celtic crash out of Europe.
The 2-1 defeat - which came as a result of a late own goal by Gary
Caldwell - was Celtic's 17th away from home in 18 Champions League
ties.
Strachan said: "It was there for us but our inability to keep
a clean sheet has been the downfall in our run away from home and until
we get that sorted things like tonight are possible. It didn't look
possible but it happened."
Missed chances also cost Celtic dear but Strachan thought his side
were in control after taking the lead through Barry Robson. "We
were only one goal up but I thought it would be enough," he said.
"I didn't see any real threat to us, so it's
disappointing.
"I can't explain this except for our inability to keep
clean sheets."

Honda on Thursday said it is recalling 4.89 million vehicles over fears about airbag inflators that could explode, widening a global auto parts crisis linked to several deaths.
Japan's number three automaker announced the recall just a day after Toyota and Nissan said they were calling back a combined 6.5 million vehicles over fears about airbags made by embattled supplier Takata.
The latest moves bring the number of vehicles recalled just by Japan's biggest automakers to 30 million, with their overseas rivals including General Motors also affected by the snowballing scandal.
Honda, which is Takata's biggest airbag customer, has seen its bottom line take a hit owing to soaring recall-related costs with the Civic sedan maker now having recalled more than 19 million vehicles globally.
As many as six deaths have been linked to Takata's airbag defect, but Honda said there were no accidents stemming from its latest recall.
"There were no injuries or deaths in relation to the recalls this time -- they're meant to prevent accidents before they happen," a Tokyo-based Honda spokeswoman said.

The firm had an open disagreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which accused Takata of not helping with its investigation into the defects.
Tokyo-based Takata, one of the world's biggest air-bag companies, is a key supplier to major automakers with dozens of plants and offices in 20 countries, including the United States, China and Mexico.
Facing lawsuits and regulatory probes, Takata recently acknowledged that the crisis has taken a toll on its earnings, but added that it expects to eke out a small profit this year.
Despite the global crisis, Takata's top executives have largely stayed out of the public eye and remain tightlipped about the situation.

Faulty Household Wiring Can Trigger a Heart Defibrillator
WEDNESDAY, March 25 (HealthDay News) -- A literally shocking tale of the potential dangers of do-it-yourself home repairs for people with implanted defibrillators comes from cardiologists in Denmark.
"We recently cared for a patient who, after receiving an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, was readmitted shortly after hospital discharge because of two shocks delivered while the patient was showering," said a report in the March 26 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
There was no apparent physical reason why the device, which delivers a shock to restore normal heart rhythm if an arrhythmia occurs, should have gone off, but analysis "raised suspicion that electrical noise had caused an inappropriate ICD discharge," the report said. So the physicians sent an electrician to check the wiring of the house.
"It was found that it was due to improper installation of wiring in the patient's home because he installed a washing machine himself," said Dr. Kristian Eskesen, a cardiologist at Gentofte Hospital in Hellerup, one of the physicians reporting the event. "It was not properly grounded."
The shock would not have occurred if the washing machine had been installed by a licensed electrician, since Danish law requires safe grounding, Eskesen said. Cardiac safety was not the reason for the law, he said, "but it is one way of avoiding such problems with ICDs," he added.
There have been scattered reports of similar events with heart defibrillators. In 2002, for example, cardiologists in Hong Kong reported two such cases -- one caused by electrical signals from a power drill, the other by signals from a washing machine. And, German cardiologists described an instance of a defibrillator shock delivered because of electromagnetic signals from a washing machine.
"The reason for writing our report was to make colleagues aware of this possible problem," said report co-author Dr. Soren Hjortshoj, of Aalborg Hospital, in Aalborg, Denmark. "ICD therapy is generally a safe treatment that can help people with heart disease. But physicians should be aware of the possibility of false shocks and the reason for these."
In general, "manufacturers of ICDs do a tremendous job of making ICDs safe," Hjortshoj said. Still, "an ICD has to be sensitive to very small changes in the electrical impulses coming from the heart," which makes it vulnerable to some electrical signals originating outside of the heart, he said.
"It is luckily a rare phenomenon, but even in a very regulated society like Denmark, these occurrences take place," Hjortshoj said. "It is very essential that the ICD works correctly and triggers on the right event, otherwise it may be hostile."
Properly monitored, "the ICD is a safe treatment," he said. "But the authorities need to be aware that the regulations about electrical equipment should be followed."

Responses of multiple species of tephritid (Diptera) fruit fly parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Opiinae) to sympatric and exotic fruit volatiles.
Chemical cues from parasitoid hosts and the substrates in and on
which the hosts develop are important cues for orientation during
foraging for oviposition opportunities, adult food and perhaps
mating-convention-sites (Stuhl et al. 2011b; Vet Dicke 1992;
Godfray 1994). However, within any particular guild of parasitoids,
which chemicals are attractive may vary between species or even the
sexes of the same species. For example, females confronted with exotic
hosts might not orient towards their chemical bouquets, even if they are
otherwise suitable for their offspring. Even within a native guild
exploiting the same host a specialist female might search for a cue that
uniquely identifies the oviposition site (Vet van Alphen 1985),
while a generalist species might react to chemicals shared between
various hosts (Godfray 1994). Thus the gender of an insect, its
evolutionary history with a potential host and its degree of
specialization could all influence its behavior in the presence of a
particular host-associated odor.
Species of opiine braconids are often the most abundant and diverse
elements in New World parasitoid guilds attacking Anastrepha spp. (Lopez
et al. 1999; Sivinski et al. 2000). In addition to pest population
suppression performed by native species, various opiines have been
introduced to attack invasive flies and these are sometimes mass-reared
and inundatively released for areawide control (Sivinski et al. 1996;
Montoya et al. 2000; Rendon et al. 2006). All species examined feed as
adults on a variety of foods including extrafloral nectar and hemipteran
honeydew (Sivinski et al. 2006). Fruit or fruit juices are an obvious
food source for a "fruit fly" parasitoid and several
tephritid-attacking opiine braconids also thrive on juices seeping from
injured fruits (Sivinski et al. 2006; Stuhl et al. 2011a). In addition
to fruit juice being generally nutritious, feeding on fruit minimizes
the costs and risks of separate foraging for food and oviposition/mating
opportunities (Sivinski et al. 2006; Bernstein Jervis 2008).
However, fruit juices vary in nutritional quality and sometimes
contain compounds poisonous to certain Hymenoptera (Barker 1977). Two
fruits, one toxic and the other nutritious, are commonly encountered by
tephritid parasitoids throughout the Neotropics and subtropics. Psidium
guajava L. (guava; Myrtaceae) originated in Mesoamerica (Popenoe 1974)
and is a major host of Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann), striata
Schiner, suspensa (Loew) and, in some environments, obliqua (Macquart).
However, it is toxic to both sexes of adult braconid fruit fly
parasitoids (Stuhl et al. 2011a). Citrus sinensis L., orange, comes from
Asia (Scora 1975) and it and other citrus are infested in Mexico by
Anastrepha ludens (Loew). Orange juice/pulp is a high quality food for
adult fruit fly parasitoids (Sivinski et al. 2006; Stuhl et al. 2011a).
This dynamic, a toxic host-fruit, guava, and a non-toxic
host-fruit, orange, allowed us to test the hypotheses that a toxic fruit
might be discriminated against by historically sympatric parasitoid
species on the basis of volatiles emitted by the juice. On the other
hand, a historically allopatric species may not be able to identify a
toxic fruit and both native and exotic female responses may be
influenced by oviposition rather than feeding opportunities. Below we
first introduce the tephritid parasitoids examined and then present in
detail our hypotheses regarding their responses to purported feeding
cues.
Parasitoids
In Florida, USA and Mexico exclusive of high altitudes (Sivinski et
al. 2000), 2 native opiines and 1 introduced species are the most common
parasitoids of pests such as A. ludens (Loew) (Mexican fruit fly), A.
obliqua (Macquart) (West Indian fruit fly) and A. striata Schiner (guava
fruit fly) (Ovruski et al. 2000). These species are: Diachasmimorpha
longicaudata (Ashmead); Doryctobracon areolatus (Szepligeti) and Utetes
anastrephae (Viereck).
Diachasmimorpha longicaudata was originally collected in the
Indo-Fhilippine/Malaysian region attacking Bactrocera spp. and has been
established in the New World for little more than half a century
(Ovruski et al. 2000). They parasitize larvae in fruit on the tree and
also forage in fallen fruit (Purcell et al. 1994; Garcia-Medel et al.
2007). D. longicaudata are attracted to byproducts of fungal
decomposition, such as ethanol and ethyl acetate (Greany et al. 1977),
as well as the odors of both infested and uninfested fruit (Eben et al.
2000). Mating observed in nature occurred on and under host trees (J.
Sivinski unpublished data). Males appear to emit a pheromone while
resting on the upper surfaces of leaves, which they defend from rival
males. Periodically they leave the foliage to investigate the ground
from which virgin females might emerge.
Doryctobracon areolatus is a wide spread Neotropical native
koinobiont parasitoid of late-instar Anastrepha spp., and rarely of
Rhagoletis spp., larvae (Wharton et al. 1981; Aluja et al. 1990).
Doryctobracon areolatus, unlike D, longicaudata, does not forage over
fallen fruit but attacks larvae in fruit on the tree (Garcia-Medel et
al. 2007). The few observations of sexual behavior in the field suggest
that its mating system resembles that of D. longicaudata with aggregated
males defending leaf-territories from which they emit a pheromone and
periodically sally to the ground to search for emerging females (J.
Sivinski unpublished data).
Utetes anastrephae is also a wide-spread neotropical-native
koinobiont parasitoid of late-instar larvae, and one that often occurs
in close sympatry with D. areolatus (Sivinski Petersson 1997).
Utetes anastrephae attacks larvae in hanging fruit, but because of a
relatively short ovipositor is restricted to parasitizing hosts in
smaller fruit (Sivinski et al. 2001). It appears to be able to coexist
with D. areolatus because of its superiority in larval-larval intrinsic
competition (Aluja et al. unpublished). Nothing is known about the
mating system of U. anastrephae.
Hypotheses Regarding Adult Parasitoid Responses to Fruit-Juice
Volatiles
While all the above are fruit-fly generalists, in the sense of
multiple-hosts and multiple host-fruit, and all attack late instar
larvae (Sivinski et al. 1996; Aluja et al. 2008), they differ in regions
of origin relative to the fruit examined. Thus we predict there will be
potential sexual and species-specific differences in their responses to
fruits based in part on their value as an adult food (Stuhl et al.
2011a). In the specific predictions below "shared volatile
components" refer to those present in both orange and guava and
which are assumed for the purpose of formulating the hypotheses to be
present in fruit in general. "Unique volatile components" are
those found in only one fruit or the other and for the purpose of
formulating the hypotheses serve to specifically identify that
particular fruit. Two other assumptions are made in order to predict
responses (flight bioassay) to fruit outside of the context of feeding.
These are; 1) oviposition-seeking females of all species will respond to
uninfested as well as infested fruit odors (Eben et al. 2000; Stuhl et
al. 2011b), and 2) that males locate mate-encounter sites through fruit
decomposition products since these will be closely associated with the
emergence of virgin females from the soil (Greany et al. 1977)

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Source of Parasitoids
Parasitoids were reared on larvae of A. suspensa that developed in
an artificial diet obtained from the Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services Division of Plant Industries, Gainesville,
Florida, USA (FDACS 1995). Diachasmimorpha longicaudata, D. areolatus
and U. anastrephae, were obtained from colonies at the USDA-AES, Center
for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology (USDA-ARS-CMAVE),
Gainesville, Florida, USA. Diachasmimorpha longicaudata had been in
colony for ~10 years, D. areolatus ~2 years and U. anastrephae for ~1
year. Insects were reared in a temperature controlled chamber at 23 [+
or -] 5 [degrees]60% RH, and 12:12 h L:D. Breeding colony adults were
fed a diet of 10% sucrose solution.

Occupancy of Feeding Stations: Choice and No-Choice Tests
To determine the response of D. areolatus, D. longicaudata and U.
anastrephae to various food sources, parasitoids were observed in a
flight tunnel. Parasitoids had no prior exposure to the treatments. Ten
males and 10 mated females 4-6d old were starved 24 h prior to the
experiment, then introduced into a flight tunnel. The flight tunnel was
constructed of clear acrylic sheets 128 cm long x 31.8 cm x 31.8 cm and
located inside a laboratory at CMAVE. Illumination was provided two 120
cm fluorescent bulbs suspended above the flight tunnel. The light source
and the light emitted by the room lighting produced an illumination
within the tunnel of ~1600 lux. The room temperature ranged from
28.7-28.8[degrees]C and humidity between 37.6-38.1%' RH. The room
air was pulled into the flight tunnel by using a Shaded Pole Blower
(Dayton Electric Mfg. C, Niles, Illinois). This produced air flow within
the tunnel through a charcoal filter and exhausted it into a hood. The
exhaust was covered with screen to prevent insects from entering the
tube. Abaffle inside a tube that connected the downwind end of the
tunnel with the exhaust system of the hood allowed for air flow
adjustment. Air speed was maintained at 0.2 m/s. Previous studies
performed by Messing et al. (1997) determined this speed to stimulate
the best flight in D. longicaudata.
Three treatments consisting of guava juice, orange juice or water
were utilized. Ripe guava was collected from a small orchard organically
grown at USDA-ARS-CMAVE, Gainesville, Florida, USA. Guava juice was
extracted from peeled ripe fruit by pressing the pulp through mesh to
remove the seeds. The pulp and an equal amount of water were blended
together. Juice was collected by filtering the blend through cloth to
separate the solids from the juice. Orange pulp was prepared from
organic fruit purchased from a local market then peeled, sectioned (~60
g) and sliced crosswise to expose pulp. Juice was manually extracted.

Saturated cotton balls containing 10 mL of liquid were suspended
inside 60 mL souffle cups (SoloHP47, Solo Cup Co., Lake Forest,
Illinois) ~10 cm from the top of the flight tunnel using wire. There
were 2 rows of 3 sites suspended and spaced 15 cm apart along the short
axis and 30 cm apart along the long axis. The placement of the
treatments was rotated clockwise over consecutive replicates and
repetitions were rotated between the tunnels to account for positional
effect. A total of 6 replicates were performed for each parasitoid
species. Parasitoids were introduced into the flight tunnel through an
opening in the top at the extreme downwind portion. Observations were
made every half h beginning at 0900 h and ending at 1400 h. When an
observation was made and an insect was noted on a treatment, it was
removed and replaced with another of the same sex. Following this
experiment, in which parasitoids had a choice of fruit juices, a similar
set of experiments was conducted to compare responses to guava juice or
water. Comparisons of guava juice, orange juice and water were made
through Analysis of Variance with subsequent mean comparisons by
Waller's test (SAS Inst. 2002). A paired t-test procedure was
performed for the analysis of guava juice and water (SAS Inst. 2002).
Attraction to Fruit Juice Volatiles: Choice and No-Choice Test
To distinguish between attraction and arresting, a flight tunnel
bioassay was developed to determine the longer-distance (~1m) parasitoid
responses. Ten males and 10 mated females 4-6 d were introduced into the
flight tunnel as previously described. Treatments consisted guava and
orange fruit juice and a water control. Two cylindrical stainless steel
chambers (18.5 cm tall and 15 cm OD) with a stainless steel lid, a
single union bulkhead inlet and a single outlet were used to contain our
samples. To measure the response to a single fruit juice, one chamber
contained the juice while the other held a blank control. For the
comparison of fruit juices, each chamber contained a fruit juice. The
treatments consisted of a saturated cotton ball containing 10 mL of
liquid inside a 60 mL souffle cup (Solo HP47). Clean air was separately
passed over each of the two odor sources before emerging in the flight
tunnel. Air flow into the fruit containers was controlled by adjustable
flow meters (Aalborg Instruments, Monsey, NY) set at ~0.5 L/min. Treated
air emerged into 2 insect traps located at the upwind end of the tunnel
and placed midway between its ceiling and floor. These were constructed
from two 64 dram clear polypropylene round-bottom Drosophila stock
bottles (16004-066, VWR International, LLC, Radnor, Pennsylvania). A 10
mm hole was placed in the center of the cap to allow insects to enter
the trap. The flight tunnel and its traps were checked every 30 min from
0900 to 1400 h. A positive response was recorded when there was a
parasitoid inside the trap. The insect was removed from the trap and
replaced with a naive insect (i.e., never exposed to fruit odors) from a
stock cage where the original insects had been obtained. The position of
the treatment and control were changed after each replication to prevent
positional effects. There were 5 replicates each of type of fruit. Means
were compared by a paired t-test procedure (SAS Inst. 2002).

RESULTS
Occupancy of Feeding Stations Containing Fruit Juices or Water
When provided with feeding stations containing guava juice, orange
juice or water, both sexes of all species were significantly more likely
to be located at the orange stations than at those containing guava
(Fig. 1). When given the more limited choice of water or guava juice,
females of D. longicaudata and D. areolatus were observed more often at
guava stations. However, female U. anastrephae and males of all 3
species had no preference for guava juice over water (Fig. 2).
Attraction to Fruit Juice Volatiles: Choice and No-Choice Tests
When presented the volatiles of orange juice or control volatiles
collected from water, both sexes of all 3 species significantly selected
those of orange juice (Fig. 3). When provided a choice of guava juice
volatiles or water, all females were attracted to guava juice volatiles
(Fig. 4). Diachasmimorpha longicaudata and U. anastrephae males also
showed preference for guava juice while D. areolatus males chose equally
between the treatments. Males and females of all 3 species were more
attracted to the volatiles of orange juice than to those from guava
juice (Fig. 5).
DISCUSSION
Predicted residencies at food-stations and attractions to volatiles
were often met but there were also several unfulfilled predictions. Both
males and females of all 3 species chose to spend time feeding on orange
juice when simultaneously presented a choice between feeding-stations
with orange juice, guava juice or water. There were no differences
between water and guava juice. However, when guava juice or water were
the only choices, females of the originally Asian D. longicaudata and
the Neotropical-native D. areolatus were significantly more likely to be
located at the guava stations. Female U. anastrephae and males of all 3
species had no significant preference for guava juice over water.
Because guava juice is toxic to D. areolatus and since guava and D.
areolatus have presumably been sympatric over evolutionary time, female
D. areolatus residency at guava even when no other food was available,
was unexpected. Also unexpected was the rejection of guava juice by male
D. longicaudata. This species has only recently become sympatric with
guava and has had less opportunity to evolve distaste for the toxic
fruit.

Males and females of all 3 species were significantly attracted to
orange juice volatiles when presented with a choice of orange juice or
water. As predicted, females of all 3 species responded positively to
guava volatiles presumably because at least some of its constituents
serve as cues to potential oviposition sites. However, males of D.
longicaudata and U. anastrephae also showed positive responses to guava
juice volatiles, albeit weak responses relative to those of females.
Only D. areolatus males met the prediction that toxic guava would be
recognized by its volatiles and rejected.
One of these failed predictions concerned the behavior of male D.
longicaudata. Contrary to expectations males did not occupy guava
feeding-stations but did respond, to a small but significant degree, to
guava volatiles. It had been proposed that a lack of evolutionary
history between D. longicaudata and guava would leave them unable to
recognize a toxic food but this did not seem to be the case. Perhaps a
yet unidentified toxin in guava might be found in Asian fruits as well.
Earlier, Messing Jang (19921 had captured female D. longicaudata
in orange and guava baited traps hung in field cages but obtained no
evidence of male attraction. Another failed prediction was that D.
areolatus, having a history of sympatry with guava, would avoid
feeding-stations with toxic food. This was the case for males, but not
for females. It is possible that females seeking both oviposition and
feeding sites might investigate feeding-stations not for nutrition but
as possible host-locations. Finally, it was predicted that male U.
anastrephae, like D. areolatus, would reject guava feeding-stations and
not be attracted by guava volatiles. The first of these predictions was
fulfilled, but males were attracted by guava volatiles. We have no ready
explanation for this difference in responses but suggest that males
might use guava volatiles to locate mates although they would not stay
to feed if sexually active females were not available. Nothing about the
U. anastrephae mating system is known at this time.
Over all, it was clear that when given a choice between orange and
guava both sexes of all 3 species were more likely to occupy orange
feeding-stations and, with the exception of D. areolatus, more attracted
to orange volatiles. Thus feeding and foraging behaviors are closely
related to food quality. While the means, presumably chemical, by which
food quality is recognized are not yet identified the present study
reemphasizes the potential usefulness of fruit odors as components of an
attractant. Augmentative parasitoid releases have promise as a resource
for area-wide fruit fly control, particularly in urban environments and
protected natural sites where insecticides cannot be repeatedly applied.
However there are technical challenges associated with its use. One of
these is the inability to easily and cheaply monitor the survival and
dispersal of the released parasitoids. This need might be met by an
effective trap baited with synthetic feeding and/or ovipositional cues.
There are at least 5 potential sources of opiine-attractive
compounds: fruit, other adult foods such as honey dew or flower-nectar
(e.g., acetophenone from Lobularia maritima L. in Rohrig et al. 2008;
Sivinski et al. 2006; Sivinski et al. 2011; Wang et al. 2011), fruit fly
larvae (e.g., para-ethylacetophenone in Stuhl et al. 2011b), the
by-products of fruit fly infestation and decay (e.g., fun gal-derived
ethanol, acetaldehyde and acetic acid in Greany et al. 1977;
2-phenylethyl acetate unique to infested mango [Mangifera indica L.] in
Carrasco et al. 2005), and adult-host semiochemicals (e.g., Prokopy
Webster 1978; Roitberg Lalonde 1991). It seems possible that
all of these, in one combination or another, might contribute to a
useful monitoring system. The differences between the attractiveness of
guava and orange are a step in the identification of the chemical basis
of fruit-attractiveness. They provide 1) further evidence that not all
uninfested fruit are equally attractive and 2) a relatively attractive
and easily obtainable standard, orange, with which to compare the
attractiveness of other fruit in the future. A hierarchy of
opiine-attractiveness in fruit would substantially aid the
identification of chemicals correlated to positive parasitoid responses
(Messing Jang 1992).
